I think you should train your dog. I have a dog that does the same and I'm soon going to start working with him everyday on recall excersizes. I bought a whistle, treat pouch, and a 20' lead. I'm going to run him for about 15-30 minutes just to get his extra energy out, then I'm going to take him to an open field. I'm gonna put the 20' lead on him and let him run. I then will blow the whistle followed by a "Smokey, COME" and when he comes, I reward him. Even when he stays beside me, he gets rewarded. The idea is for him to stay near me at all times and when he doesn't, he needs to listen when I want him to come back.

Also, I would work with his door manners. Anytime the door is opened, you need to teach him to sit and STAY. He shouldn't be up at the door because that just gives him the extra opportunity to go.
