To answer your question - yes a Yorkie "could" have a lot of black and still be a purebred Yorkie. Purebred really only means that they have been bred with another Yorkie and registered with the AKC or CKC. It doesn't say that they meet the "standard" that the YTCA (Yorkshire Terrier Club of America) has set for this breed. Two poorly bred Yorkies could be bred together and have AKC registered purebred Yorkies - it does not guarantee that they will be the true representation of the breed. sad...

Standards are put into place so that you can recognize what the breed should look like. With so many people *mixing breeds it is starting to make it impossible to do. Not just with Yorkies. I have seen people point out what they think is a black Lab and I know it is not! People seem to think that because it's black and within a certain weight range that it is a Lab. (unfortunately dog pounds are notorious for this) There are many breeds that are black and look similar to a blk Lab. Same with the YT - many people will call a dog with some terrier in it "part Yorkie" when in fact it is not. Yes, it may have terrier in it but there are SO many other terrier breeds that it could be mixed with that it's hard to tell when you don't a "standard" used or to go by. But if they were to look up the breed "standards" they would see what the actual colors, height, weights, temperament, hair texture etc is supposed to be.

*Mixing breeds change the traits - period!

You can NOT tell what the dog is going to look like just by seeing their parents. You really need to go back several generations of "each side" to see what they look like. That is why it's important to know the history of your dog (pedigree) but only if you care about that. Some people don't - and I totally applaud them!!! But some people do... and that has to be respected too.

Bottom line is - you're paying $800 for a puppy you really don't know much about. I doubt that the lady will give you your deposit back now - so, I guess you'll have to rack it up to experience. Hopefully you'll love and be happy with your new puppy!


Please do NOT take that puppy before 10-12 WEEKS old. It's unfortunate that this lady has cancer etc but she needs to do the right thing by this puppy that she allowed to be born! Then she needs to spay/neuter both of her dogs. She's in no position to be breeding - accidental or not.
