Like I said, lots of dogs do well on it. However, there ARE many cases of allergies/itching. Just search "Royal Canin" on this site and you'll find countless threads about it. Unfortunately, vets get learn very little about nutrition in vet school and a lot of times they get bonuses from pet food companies for recommending a certain food. If this were not the case, they would never recommend Science Diet or any of the other brands...
