Gucci and I went through this last night, HE NEVER MATTS but I ALSO BRUSH HIM DAILY... well me being the smart mommy I am .. I decided to skip brushing him for 2 nights because I have been super busy with X-mas wrapping.. and guess what?? WE HAD MATTS on his back and front legs only THANK GOODNESS...
So he went crazy at first .. I got out the cheerios and broke them in 4ths sat down on the floor and gently brushed in a picking like motion going upwards against the matts not with them and he didn't cry at all. I gave him a 1/4 of a cheerio and patted him with a good boy everytime he didn't try and jump away.
Maybe you can try that...
