Both of my girls use pee pads, and my house has no smell. I take the poo and flush it and throw the pad away. I couldn't leave a pad down after they have pooped on it. I use the pads from Sam's and change it about 4-6 times, depending on how often they have to pee. Puppies, pee more so you will find that you are changing them more often.
I wash the area at least once a day just to make sure that there is no smell, and have never had to use any type of deodorizer the pads usually have some sort of deodorizer in them anyway.
My girls also get there bums washed after pooping, these little ones have the run of the house
