I'm a 1st Time Yorkie owner too. Let's see..... these are the things I am doing to prepare for winter:
1. Buying holiday bows
2. Buying winter clothes, i.e. sweatshirts, fleece wear, coat, sweaters
3. New toys, for all those indoor days
4. Planning potty stradegy: I am anticipatating some resistance to cold bitter wind weather and cold hard grass up the you know what!
