He went to his first puppy class yesterday and everything was fine. When we got into the training area the puppies were let loose and free to run around and play. There was a German Shepherd puppy, Hound, miniature Pincher, Chihuahua, etc. Sylar went right in the mix and tried to play with them and of course all the puppies are excited..well one stepped/trampled over Sylar and after that for the rest of the class he hid in between people's legs or only tried to play with people.
Any chance this was a one time fluke? |
A similar thing happened to Joey, and large puppies are the worse to be around. They're clumsy and it's really easy for them to knock a smaller dog down, and the rest of the dogs will trample your dog. He'd probably be ok, one on one, but in a group it can be dangerous. Just let him near the dogs one on one, maybe going early and interacting with a dog before class would help. You can also ask about a training class that has more small dogs in it. By the way, it's very normal for him to bark at other dogs when he goes on walks. It's his way of protecting you.
