I hope somebody has a better answer for you...
I haven't cut Lexi's nails, but I do cut my guinea pigs' nails. Some are white, so I can see okay. The ones that are black, I err on the side of caution and I just don't cut very low on those.
I also have a container of styptic powder in case I cut too low. Before cutting, I always get out the powder, a cup of water, and some q-tips, so I am ready.
