I am not an expert but I say less is more. I just take off the very tip. I do it often maybe every 2 weeks or so. I can tell when they have to be cut because I can hear them "clicking" on the hard floor. I also don't want to hurt them or make them bleed, but I think a little at a time. Good Luck
