Wearing satin/silk lined clothing or undershirt will help with the matting problem. But wearing anything for hours or over night will make them have the tendency to get hair mats.
Mine usually wear clothes or coats just when we are going out. Ruby will wear a sweater in the house, on our coldest days. And when she does, I just make sure she is brushed/combed out a couple of times a day.
