AKC registered...Littermates were all around 5 lbs. Chewy is an athletic 17 pounds at 1 year old, we aren't sure if he's done yet or not...I hope he grows more, just to show those AKC standard's who's boss! Then again, the breeder GAVE him to us since he was probably scaring off business. I ahve heard dogs like mine called "Throwbacks" by breeders and vets. I rather like the term, but still prefer "Giant Yorkie" and fantasize about a giant Yorkie breed making a come back.

Until the 1930's the yorkshire terrier was a 30 lb dog listed in the working group. The miniaturization and subsequent move to the toy group came later. So while most yorkies are tiny little guys, its common for a throwback to the larger ancestral proportions (or nearly thus) to emerge from a litter.

Bigger Yorkies can be lots more fun in some circumstances. They can go on much longer walks, if you have rats you never will again, cut them short, leave the ears floppy, and people will always stop and ask you "What kind of dog is that, and where can I get one?". I am also given to understand that bigger yorkies also have fewer health issues such as super-delicate tracheas, hypoglycemia, bad teeth, among others. They are indeed less delicate and are perfect for competitive dog sports (agillity in particular).

At 6 lbs and three months, I don't think you have a show dog on your hands. I think you have a pet or a working dog. If you were charged show-dog prices you should be ready to speak with the breeder about getting some of that money back.

Questions for other large-yorkie owners:
Have any of you other large yorkie owners found your pups to me more like collies in some ways than Yorkies? Mine is always wanting a job to do and get's into such a serious work-minded mode when we are working and training. He likes his lap-time, sure, but not for too long before he's doing what I call Snootering For Trouble. He certainly seems to require lots more excersize than other yorkie owners tell me they use.

Another thing I wonder about...Chewy was born the runt of his litter and thereafter continued to quickly outpace his littermates in growth. Do any of you out there know the birth wieght of your larger yorkies as relates to his littermates? I was wondering if it's a common thing or what...
