Kingston has his own crate which we keep next to the bed. It's nice because we can still comfort him with soft words if he needs it, but we also have our own space too. Plus, he still has accidents and this way we know he won't go when we sleep because he won't go in his bed.
It also helps though that he sleeps through the night.
I think your doggy keeps waking up because he's sleeping next to you guys and when he sees you he wants to play, play, play
