I have a 5 lb bitch whose 1st litter consisted of one puppy whom the vet said was HUGE on day 62. He showed me the x-ray and the pup seemed to take up her whole abdomen, stretching from pelvis to up under the ribs.
I have to admit...the pup looked scary big. We scheduled her c-section for the next day. Everything went fine. However, the little female puppy only weighed 3.2 ounces. She was no where as big as they thought she was.
This girl's next litter consisted of another singleton pup who looked just as big as the last puppy. But this time we decided to let her attempt to whelp this puppy on her own. She whelped this puppy with no problems at all. The puppy was another female who weighed 4.5 ounces.
So...most likely...she would have had the 1st singleton pup if we would have let her try.
After this experience...I plan to alway's let my girls try to whelp naturally before rushing to a section.
