He shouldn't get too much area, unless you're right there to watch him. If you see him starting to smell, get him to the pee pad(if he's peeing on it, he's doing excellent for his age). Usually within about 10 minutes after they're done eating, they're going to have to poop. With all of mine(I have 4 trained to pads, I would praise them when they would poop on it, but, if I caught them pooping in other places than where the pee pads were, I would hurry and get them over to the pee pad, then praise, if I saw them but, couldn't move them fast enough, I would take them over, put their nose down by it(never in it) and tell them NO, you poo poo on your paper, then would take them over to it. He will get it, he's still very young
