i never allow mine to chew on bully sticks unless i am in the same room as them and can keep an eye and ear on them....i also make sure and throw them out before they get too short (about 2-3 inches) unless they are on my lap and i am holding on to one end

and miss buffey will try and cram the soft part down her throat too to get to the new part ... sometimes i can hear her gagging...that is when i take it away from her and give her a new one or make sure to hold on to part of it
