My baby will be 8 mo. old in 2 days, and she started turning quite awhile ago....it started maybe when she was 10 or 12 weeks. Now, her back is silvery with about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of puppy cottony black on the tips. I think the black looks kind of funny and it's so cottony, not like the silvery hair at all, that it tangles easier. So, the last time I went to the groomers, I had them trim ~1/4 inch all over (she said she couldn't do that with the clippers, that it would make her hair shorter than I wanted, so I asked her to hold the hair out and trim it like humans get haircuts!
) So, we're slowly working the puppy black off...I don't want to just do it all at once since I want her to stay in a long coat. Also, her head has black tips, silvery white centers, and champagne blond roots. I had her trim up her head too, but there are some spots where the black still goes all the way down to the root, so it will take a lot longer. Here is a picture we took of her at 7 mo. old so you can see what she looked like before she had her trim (see the silvery blue in the center of her back and the champagne at her top know?):
