I looked up the law and dogs don't have to be vaccinated for rabies until they are seven months old in New Jersey. I'd wait as long as possible since Dr. Dodd's doesn't recommend rabies vaccinations before six months old.

He'll need a one year booster, then a booster every three years after that. Always make sure that the rabies vaccine is given separately from other vaccines with 2-3 weeks in between.

Sadly, Pfizer makes the vaccine and it is identical whether it is given annually or every three years. It's just packaged differently under the names Defensor I and Defensor 3 to satisfy different state's requirements. Pfizer's own testing showed that the vaccine lasted for at least three years.
