Here is my schedule for him.
6AM - Walk (if he doesn't poop/pee put him back in the crate and then try again in 10-15 miunutes if he does poop/pee I put him in the bigger crate with his food)
7:30AM - My boyfriend wakes up and walks him again and then puts him back in the big crate
11AM - I go home to walk him
3-4PM - I walk him again and then he gets to play
5-6PM - He should have already had dinner (I leave a bowl for him so he can eat whenever he wants)
7PM - Walk him again and then let him play
10-11PM - Walk him again and then slowly try to get him to go to sleep (that is the part I'm having issues with..he barks for half an hour until he tires out)
Sometimes I can cheat and I'll skip the 11AM walk but my puppy is 3 months old and really good at holding it in (mostly because he's crated and he won't eliminate where he sleeps) although he'll be way too hyper to want to sleep later that night so I have to take him for a long walk around 3-4PM. |
I wanted to add more that I forgot but the editing feature of this forum allows a 5 minute time expiration.
In any case, if he doesn't go do not award him with space and play time but put him back in the crate and try again until he eliminates outside. He will associate going outside with good things, I think.
Also, I've been telling my Sylar to "hurry up" and he goes in a matter of 5 minutes. I'm not sure how I got him to associate "hurry up" with hurrying to sniff out a good spot to potty and eliminate but he does. I praise him right when he's doing his deed. You may want to try treats, I haven't had to do that but it may very well work.
