That can happen so easily. It is amazing that it doesn't happen more often when you see them chewing the cord. I can't see why the leg would need amputated though unless gangreen set in or the leg was deformed in such a way that it was a hazard to the pup. Are you going to post pictures? Did the vet say other than that the pup was doing great?
