I trained Emilio to wee wee pads in a litter box as well. I trained him that way from day 1. I did use a housebreaking aid spray in the beginning, it is supposed to make them want to go there. Once he got it consistently, I stopped using the spray. I think it works better than just the pad, becuase the pan gives them a defined area. We call it his potty. When he goes, he gets a treat and lots of praise. I would highly recommend this. It is also nice cause you can take it to other peoples homes and he goes right to it. Also, I would suggest keeping it in the living room or where you are and in the beginning I kept putting him in it and saying potty, probably at least once an hour and if he had an accident I would put him in it as well.
