I don't like them either....and agree you should be able to hold the childs hand....if you have a free hand for the "leash" you have one for the child's hand :-)
However once when I was in Disney they did have cute Disney ones that attacted to your wrist (parent) and child's wrist.... I did not think those were as bad because you were also wearing one and it was very crowded..however I still would not use one....
