I think the babies would be ok. Since the breeds are so different there just might be more genetic variation. Bottom line is they're both dogs, mixing shouldn't be a problem. It's not like you're mixing a cat with a dog.
I once saw an ad for someone selling/rehoming a yorkie-rottweiler mix (sorry if I misspelled that). It looked like a med sized dog that looked a lot like a yorkie.

Just wanted to add, the doggies from the link are so cute!! If you do have puppies, they are probably going to find homes quickly!
