Just got back from the vet with my toy fox terrier because of joint pain. I had been giving a baby aspirin a day to help w/pain but my vet didn't want that to be long term due to stomach upset. He did say a joint supplement and specialized food for joint health would do well for a younger dog but probably not for Dizzy as he's older and our main goal is to ease his pain. He started him on "Metacam" a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. We also have new wood floors and I think they definitely add to his discomfort. No give, no traction and cold. I try to keep rugs and space heaters where he spends most of his time. I know how you feel, it hurts me to see him hurt.
