I found all this very interesting. My 4 mo old Reggie has been coughing a gagging type cough for about 5 weeks now. The vet gave him an antibiotic which seems to be doing nothing for him. He said if the antibiotic didn't help we would need to x-ray him for collapsed trachea. I looked up the U-tube videos for both reverse sneezing and collapsed trachea and I think what Reggie is doing sounds more like a reverse sneeze. He tends to gag and sputter. All the videos I saw of a collapsed trachea sounded more like a honk like a dog with kennel cough to me. I sure hope Reggie is reverse sneezing and not the collapsed trachea. I will probably have him x-rayed at his recheck next week to make sure. So, what causes a reverse sneeze?
