I'd been trying to teach limp for almost a year but having no luck when I just held his paw up. Someone gave me a book on tricks, and it suggested looping the leash under his foot and then getting him to hobble forward by luring with a treat.
Sure enough, within a week or two of doing that just a few times a day, he started picking it up. The book also suggested making a sling to serve the same purpose, but I never had any luck with that. The leash idea seemed to work fine.
