I don't think you should leave it up to classes to socialize your dog. I think its a really good idea to start socialization with larger dogs as soon as possible. The day I brought Finnigan home he was introduced to my parents Chow Chows and he's been around larger dogs since. Now he thinks he's a big dog. I don't think he has a clue he's small. If the big ones get too rough he lets them know it!

Also, I would hope that one of the requirements to be in the classes is that the owner is able to control their dogs so you don't have to worry about unfriendly dogs. (but I know its not a perfect world and sometimes an unfriendly dog gets in the classes)
