I'm in a bind and was wondering if anyone has ever used a shipping company to ship their pets out of the country?

My aunt and her family are moving overseas and it turns out that American Airlines won't even have them checked in as baggage to their connecting flight to Japan. American Airlines have been giving us the run around for quite a few days now. First saying that they can be considered as carry on, then saying they can be checked in, and now saying they can't at all. My aunt hates to even consider using a shipping company because she wants to monitor every step her dogs will take but it looks like she may not have any option.

Can anyone please give me a reference?
