I would stop the rough play. teach him to fetch.
You said when you reach for him he shows his teeth. Is his nub going? Or is he growling? If he is showing his teeth but his tail is going he is smiling! My Yorkie smiles all the time. All I have to do is say "what you doing". and he smiles!
If he looks like he is going to tear your hand off, not smiling.
