Your trainer was probably aghast because for most dogs this would be way too much. Some breeds, in fact, should be bathed no more than every 6 months due to extremely dry skin, and they get stinky too in the meantime. Most of what you read on the matter refers to dogs in general, but there are huge differences among breeds, and they shouldn't be grouped together this way. Joey's breeder is a show breeder and they tend to know what is best for their dog's coats because the ring demands a gorgeous coat, and healthy skin. She recommended once a week bathing, always using a shampoo meant for dogs because they have a difference Ph than humans. Even gentle human shampoos will dry out a dog's skin. Follow shampooing with a dog's hair conditioner, and never skimp on the most important part, rinsing really well. Remember, Yorkies hair is more like human hair, they don't have an undercoat and shed like most dogs.
