Well I know this isn't the US but here in Cadiz the prices are also sky high. Cadiz, capital is basically a small island. The entire west coast of it is all beach (some 4-5 kms). If you wish to purchase a flat here, a small 2 bedroom will go for around $480 000 USD. This would be for one about 70 sq. metres or roughly 750 sq. feet with an ocean view and right in front of the beach "Pimera Linea". For a 3-4 bedroom is way too much.

I live in what they call here "Segunda Linea" which the next parallel street to the ocean, in a 3 bedroom 120 sq. metre = 1300 sq. feet. This for the same price as the one I previously mentioned and only 150 metres from the beach. Prices are getting ridiculous here, the Spanish wages are rather low but since there is a high demand from the English, German, including alot of rich people from Madrid and Barcelona... and on this Island there is no space left for building you get what there is. On the good side I don't see much violence and the people are really friendly.
