Default Etiquette at functions for special diets?

For those of you who have a special diet (vegetarian, allergies), do you bring your own food to special functions like family holiday dinners and such?

What is the right thing to do? I have gone gluten free/wheat free 6 months ago due to a sensitivity and I have several family things over the next month to go to. I don't want to ask them to make me anything special, but it also feels rude if I bring my own food or not eat at all.

Lots of basic cooking items like bouillon cubes, broth, certain seasonings have gluten in them. So nothing is really safe for me unless I know exactly whats in it. And you just dont ask old ladies like my husbands grandma how she makes her turkey, lol.

Then I'm going to a family banquet that only has one selection of dinner and it has noodles and breading.

Help!?!
