Have you thought about switching to another puppy food? Something higher quality then Iams may help as well, since Iams has a lot of ingredients with little nutritional value.
A 'natural' or holistic pet food might help, since those are made of whole food ingredients...Also, it will be more flavorfull, so he might eat a little more. Petco or Petsmart carry a bunch now, like Wellness, Halo and Solid Gold, just to name a few. There are also some high quality foods JUST available at pet shops..
It is better to err on the side of thinner, but since your vet said...Just make sure not to go overboard!
