For the roll over trick with Mahina I kinda followed this video but not totally...
You can find a lot of training videos on youtube. I'm more of a visual learner, so I don't know if I'm about to explain the trick very well.
I taught her how to lie down first then I would take the treat and kind of bring it around to her shoulders so that she would follow it. Then I would bring it around back towards me and this would cause her to roll over. You kind of just lead her into the roll over. I never touched her just lured her and I've never used a clicker although it's highly recommended.
I'd say this trick was one of the harder ones to do with her as, like you said with your dog she would jump up. Usually she gets a trick within 10-20 trys... this one took longer then that. But now for a treat she'll go into roll over mode without being asked (she doesn't get a treat for something she wasn't asked to do... unless it's a fairly new trick, like we're learning shake right now.)
I think yorkies are very smart... but stubborn! Use a trick your dog goes crazy over.
I've got my girl to
sit, lie down, roll over, circles (working on it), shake (working on it), crawl, get it, bring it, go around (on the ramp), high five.
I have to teach her how to stay.... not so easy with her.
