Shoot, I can never find the good discussions of this when I want to. Usually, people who have had success potty training advise you to go back to the basics if you're having trouble. Here are some things you might try:

* Consider limiting their freedom around the house, especially when you're away, so you know exactly when and where they're going. This can be a babygate in the kitchen or a laundry room or an X-pen set up in the living room. But don't give them the run of the house until they earn it.

* You want to be able to reward successes with treats and praise, so take them out frequently during the day. Some people say hourly. And really watch them. Don't just let them run around the yard. Immediately after they pee or poop, praise, praise, praise and give them their favorite treat. You can do the same thing on outside walks.

* Mistakes around the house. If you don't catch them in the act, it's too late. Don't take them to the spot and scold them. Often times, the dogs think that they're not supposed to go ANYWHERE. That's when they'll try to hide it from you. They know they're going to get in trouble, but the really have to go, so they try to hide it from you.

* Caught in the act. If you do catch them in the act, a firm NO followed by a trip outside is all you need. Don't freak out, spank or anything harsh. It's almost like teaching them a trick. If they don't learn how to sit, you don't spank them or scold them. You just don't reward them until they get it right.

Good luck. Sometimes it just takes extra time.
