My Cocker Spaniel doesn't like his face cleaned, but I just use warm water on a cotton pad. I feel bad when I do this since he doesn't like it, but I hold his muzzle with one hand so he can't nip at me or get away, and then wipe his eyes with the cotton pad in my other hand.
