It's coming up on Thanksgiving and is a great time to point out that the pilgrims nearly starved to death and probably would have except for two important things.

First they decided to not only plant a "common" food plot for the community, as they had in years past, but also to grant each family a parcel of land and seed to plant a private food plot. This was to be the beginning of private property rights in America. With this change, and the remembrance of how close they had been to starving each winter thus far, (at one point each person receiving five kernels of corn per day) even the children planted in the field willingly. We'll call that incentive just for fun.

Secondly they waited and watched while the worst drought the natives had ever seen ensued and withered the new plantings. At the point where all hope was lost the pilgrims humbled themselves in prayer at the direction of Mr. Bradford and fasted and prayed for days. When the rain began it wasn't the type that normally follows a drought, the storms and destruction. Rather it was a gentle soaking rain that lasted for days nurturing the withered crops and giving what would later be the most bountiful harvest the natives had ever seen. The transition from hopelessness to unprecedented bounty was such that even the unbelieving natives paid homage to the God of the pilgrims.

Knowledge of the past is the only preventative for repeating it's failures. If fear of losing what you have reminds you to count your blessings...be thankful.
thank your for this post...very informative and true..
