I trained my dog to follow me by putting him on his doggie mat with a toy. I also used a leash that attached to him with a harness to train him not to leave the room where I was sitting. This technique made it easier for me to potty train him and kept him from wondering off. I did not need to worry about what my dog might be doing and kept him out of trouble. I think a puppy gate would work wonderfully for you too. I trained my dog to follow me by giving him the command "follow mother" by using the leash. My dogs love to follow me, and they hate to be alone if they know I am home.
