It depends on how well they do with their training. My boy was almost 2 before I started letting him have full run of the house. He was originally crate and pen trained. It took me almost a year just to potty train him completely. Then he had a few accidents. Once he was completely trained i started letting him out for like an hour at a time when I left just to see how he did. Then I extended that time.
He now has full roam of the house and is no longer in need of a crate. He only chews on his toys and hasn't had any accidents in a long time.
