While not nearly as serious as your situation, we also recently had an experience where being a knowledgeable pet owner paid off. Gizmo had a few bumps after a grooming, but just didn't seem to be acting "right". We followed our instincts and it turned out to be a staph infection which could have been much more serious if we hadn't caught it so early.
