I have one of these...and if you don't cover it with a blanket, it won't feel like a "crate" and the XL kind is big enough to not be too small for her.... I use that for my Suzie poodle (she's a jumper and I don't trust her potty-wise around the house)...and she used to jump and jump and hurt her legs in the x-pen .
that's a good idea too. I actually have bought one of the XL collapsible crate with opennings on top and the front, but its been sleeping in my closet forever. I should give this a try.

I am suprised at those jumpers, how could they jump onto/out of something thats so much taller than their body??

PS: I saw that you have a chi as well!
