I fly with Lola all the time and she is 9 lb. the original sherpa in medium size is fine--not the prettiest but allowed by all the airlines and fits under the seat fine.
Look at the plan configuration. If you are flying an embrear the carrier will not fit under the aisle, get a window seat to be safe.
