You should never thaw it on the counter; bacteria can grow too fast. The microwave is the fastest, and I found that with mine, I set if for 30 seconds on high, and break away the thawed part and put the rest in the microwave, I continue to do this until it's all thawed. Depending on your microwave you might want to vary you time between checking. High is the fastest, but because of hot spots, some parts will cook, while other spots remain frozen, and you want to avoid this. Another safe way is to do it with less power, for a longer period of time, but I found taking off the thawed and returning the rest is the best way for me.
