I think they like to cover other dogs smells. So this is one reason. The other reason is they like to climb under things to do their business because to them it's like they are hiding it from normal traffice areas. I have found my yorkies even like to climb on a ledge of woodworking to defecate.
No matter what I do my 2 year old still defecates in my daughters closet, every morning if she slept in her room. I really think no matter what we use we don't ever remove a scent of them being at that spot before.
