I put up a real tree the first year I had them, now I have an artificial one. My boys were fine with both trees, but did pee all over the beautiful tree skirt I had. I had to scrub it clean by hand.

Just don't use tinsel and don't put any decorations too low to the floor, better safe than sorry.
