I need to get those steps, my bed is quite high too. (I'm also 5'2", dang) Mocha jumped down once or twice and I got so worried. She goes up the stairs herself, so I don't think any kind of steps will be a problem. I just need to find the right one.
Usually I wet wipe Mocha all over after a walk, Lulu too. I am in the process of looking for dog shoes because to wash 4 pairs of feet everyday is not very fun

Well.. I know it's not very sanitary to let the dogs on my bed after walks and such.. but as someone said, they lick their genitals, and we still kiss them, no? I'm not dead yet
