Oh, I just found this thread! I hope you haven't left yet for your trip.
I took Tink on her first flight this summer and I was so afraid she would cry or bark. She can't take the prescription sedatives because of health issues, but the vet did say it would be fine to give her Benedryl. Your vet would need to tell you how much based on your little guy's weight. But it worked wonderfully for Tink. She just layed down and slept most of the way, rarely cried and never barked.
