I actually recommend Victoria Stillwell's book, Its Me or the Dog and the book 'For the Love of a Dog' by Patricia McConnell. Victoria Stillwell's book lays down the groundwork for how to train a dog and the 2nd book really gives you insight into how dogs think and how to utilize the way their minds work in order to achieve desired behavior - both tricks and general behavior...
