Just bought a yorkie for my wife! potty problems :( Well i'll give you a bit of background information in order to hopefully find someone who can give me a good answer to this. I'm in the US Airforce and i'm currently stationed in England. I'm military police and I work alot and i'm frequently away for training/deployments. My wife therefore is alone alot and has wanted a yorkie for awhile. We researched and finally found a local breeder so I got her an early christmas present.
My yorkie is 7 months old and his name is Oliver, I've never had a tiny dog(5 lbs) before and I thought i'd hate it but actually I like him. He's very affectionate and he's also outgoing. He likes to play and has an all around good personality. The breeder we bought him from wasn't very specific on his potty training, she said he had minimal training and that's about it. I don't really wanna call her and inquire about it so I started researching online and found this site. So basically I'm new to this whole inside the house small dog thing. I've never had an inside dog and nether has my wife. So were not very experienced in this department.
Most of my research has told me that you shouldn't scold or negatively enforce the behaviors of the dog. I have a hard time doing this because I'm a pretty disciplined person and my lifestyle is just like that. I'm trying though! We don't really know how to potty train him...
During the night or when we are both gone he goes into a cage with a potty pad and a blanket for him to lay on. There isn't that much room... the cage is pretty big but i have a divider in it so he only has minimal room. I read this is good because they don't like to lay or sleep in their pee or poop. We've had him for 3 days and so far he has pooped in his cage while we were sleeping everynight. It's very cold and wet outside(england weather sucks) so I put a potty pad by the backdoor and tried putting him on it and when he pee's somewhere else we tell him no then put him on the potty pad. We wipe it up and put the paper towel on the potty pad aswell. He has pee'd a few times like on the wall and on my tv stand and has only pooped in his cage. I just tried taking him outside because it stopped raining and he pee'd like 5 times on this one plant pot? I guess a cat or something was there but regardless each time he went I told him good boy and petted him quite a few times, then let him roam some more. He didn't poop and it's almost time for bed so... I guess i'll just cage him tonight again and take him out when I wake up.
Please tell me the best way to go about making sure he learns successfully, I want him trained ASAP but I do like him and i'm willing to work with him and my wife obviously aswell. Please help me, thanks very much in advance. |
