Spike has never really had a problem with car rides, and we've made a couple of visits to my sister, who lives five hours away. The car seat is a great idea, if only to keep your pet safe in case of sudden stops. We got ours at PetSmart - the brand name is Outward Hound, and it was about $40 CDN.

If your trip is 1 1/2 hours, is there somewhere you could stop, say halfway there, for some fresh air? I know that when I get car sick, fresh air helps a lot.

My sister did have trouble travelling with her dog until he got used to the car trips, so her vet recommended a small dose of Gravol (or similar dimenhydrinate like Dramamine) before the trip. You would need to consult your vet for the recommended dose for your dog, because it does vary by weight.

Also, if you can, try to take your dog out for shorter car rides before your longer trips. I found that it took Spike a while to get used to being in the car, so I would take him for some shorter car rides, and increase the distance gradually so he would get used to it.

Good Luck!
