Mine have fought (Suzie and Izze) over food---but not that bad!
I would suggest that you keep them separate when you are gone. I NEVER leave Suzie and Izze together, because they will eat each other up. You never know.
So, keep them separate. When food is involved, keep a close eye on them... if you hear a growl, say no.
What I do, is I say no, take away the cookie (Suzie is not posessive with me), say "calm", and return it when she behaves calmly.
I keep a close eye... so that it doesn't happen. You should try to avoid the situation as much as possible because you don't want them to think that this is normal, nor do you want their teeth contacting your skin! This can escalate.
Since I have done this---the fights are not as frequent---maybe once a month? before it was almost every day. They are also great with each other other than that... Suzie is posessive with other dogs, and Izze is a theif....so it caused problems. Both are sweet, but they are both set in their ways...
So I would suggest you evaluating what "triggers" these situations and try to avoid them or pay attention to correct them.
Please don't leave them alone together. It can be very ugly. I don't leave treats when I'm gone either, but why chance the situation?
